Editor's Note: The following is an excerpt from an article reprinted with permission of "The Word Among Us", 9639 Dr. Perry Rd #126, Ijamsville, MD 21754. It was originally published in the June 2009 issue of that periodical. For more information or to subscribe to "The Word Among Us" magazine, check their website: www.wau.org In this article, we want to look at three different ways that the Scriptures can be opened to us-ways that the word of God can teach us, inspire us, and help us see Jesus more clearly. All three ways are vital to our lives as Catholics, because they all work together to bring us closer to the Lord. As we explore these avenues of revelation, let's ask the Holy Spirit to fill us with a greater and greater confidence that anyone who ponders the word of God on the written page can come to hear the voice of God in the deepest places of their hearts.
The Power of Stories. One of the main reasons why people have been drawn to the Bible throughout the ages is because it contains stories that reach across generations and cultures, touching the human heart. Much like any other work of enduring literature, it tells stories that resonate with our own experiences of life. What's more, it does this from a godly perspective-from a perspective that is completely convinced that our heavenly Father wants to work wonders in our lives. The Book of Job, for instance, is one of literature's most moving meditations on the question of why bad things happen to good people. The story of Joseph and his brothers speaks volumes about sibling rivalry and the destructive nature of jealousy. Jesus' parable of the prodigal son tells a timeless story of loss and recovery, of the "coming home" experience that we all long for. The list could go on and on, including the stories of people like King David, Moses, Noah, and even the Virgin Mary and St. Peter...
